We are looking for volunteer representatives to join our rapidly growing team in all States and Territories.

Generally we’d like to have two representatives per state; if you are interested please email your Expression of Interest with your resume to opencaptionsaustralia@gmail.com stating why you want to join our team and what you can do for Open Captions Australia.

Meet Our Team

Anthony Sammons

Co-Founder

Anton is a co-founder of Open Captions Australia along with Bryn Davies. He is also a keen brewer, mead maker, and bread baker, living a life within sustainable principles which he brings into Open Captions Australia’s management. Anton won the 2013 Roma Wood Community Award for his advocacy efforts to make Open Captions available. Unfortunately to the staff’s disappointment, Anton doesn’t share beers, meads, breads, fruits and vegetables of the garden with them, he only shares the passion for Open Captioned movies, North Melbourne FC and talks a lot about beer.

Bryn Davies

Co-Founder/Director – Finance

Bryn Davies is a long time supporter of community groups and it is no surprise to see him actively involved with Open Captions Australia from the start. He is also involved in Deaf sports, previously as President of Deaf Basketball Australia and was appointed as Chef de Mission of the Australian Deaf Sports Team for the 2015 Asia Pacific Deaf Games and for the 2017 Deaflympics in Turkey. He is also a being a father of two beautiful girls, a husband and supporting the might Hawthorn Hawks in the AFL! His finance management background within the state and federal public service will hold Open Captions Australia in good stead as they continue to work on improving accessibility in cinemas across the country.

Sarah Davies

National Programming Coordinator

Sarah started with us in February 2015 for the Melbourne branch and she was appointed Secretary when Open Captions Australia was established and then now as a National Programming Coordinator with the role of being the direct contact liaising with cinemas in scheduling and promoting Open Captioned screenings across Australia. Along with Sarah’s passion of working within community, she brings a wealth of skills in organising / planning, social media and customer service. Sarah has extensive knowledge and experience of service delivery to a diverse community including advocacy of accessibility requirements to meet the needs of individuals.

John Uri

Representative of OCA – Queensland

John is orginally from Brisbane and he is excited to be part of the OCA team for the Queensland region to support the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. He is a strong believer of equal accessibility in cinemas and having the flexibility to watch any movies with Open Captions. He loves watching movies with Open Captions as he believes it has helped in improving his literacy and have a better conception of the story than using imagination to understand. He looks forward to supporting you in Queensland!

Luke Watts

Representative of OCA – New South Wales

Luke is a long time supporter of Open Captions in cinemas having joined the team in 2014 for the New South Wales region. 

Adrian Doyle

Representative of OCA – Victoria

Adrian is a long time member of the Deaf community and brings in a wealth of knowledge of accessibility rights being involved with Deaf Australia as a board member and the OCA Team liaising with cinemas in Victoria for Open Captioned movies. When he is not working, you will find him travelling around the world. He recently took part of a Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea.

Joanne Donahoe-Beckwith

Representative of OCA – Victoria

Joanne works as a technical producer and Director of Photography in the cinema industry and is a mother to a deaf woman. She is passionate about accessible cinema and OCA are delighted to have Joanne bring her technical knowledge of the industry to our organisation!

Damon Barrett

Representative of OCA –Western Australia

Damien is a truck driver, volunteer fire fighter and has been in the OCA team for the past 5 years as a volunteer representative for the Western Australia region. Damien enjoys going to the cinema with his family watching movies with captions on the big screen. He brings in a drive of advocacy to increase Open Caption sessions. He is excited that after several years of organising private Open Caption screenings there are cinemas coming on board to have public Open Caption screenings for the community to enjoy. 

Emma Chevron

Representative of OCA –Western Australia

Emma is an Auslan teacher at Deaf Access Plus WA and enjoys engaging with the community. As a movie fan and advocate for Open Captions in cinemas, she volunteers her time advocating for more cinemas to join the OCA community in delivering Open Caption movies for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and wider community who enjoy watching moves with captions on the big screen.
